that public to spend time with her family. She passed away on June 23, 1993 in Zagreb. The Memorial at Sibenik is dedicated to Vesna Parun. Vesna Parun’s life in art took place under very unusual circumstances. Born on the Dalmatian island of Sibenik, under the height of World War II, in August 1922. She was the only child of Nikola Parun and Antomila Parun. Vesna, her parents and her brother spent seven years in Zagreb. In this period she was exposed to art in Zagreb and Belgrade. In Zagreb she met her first mentor, the young and gifted painter Radojka Martinović. From 1935 on, Vesna Parun enrolled in the Department of Painting and Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. She studied under prof. Janko Kos and prof. Franjo Buvina, with whom she was close friends. However, her first exhibitions were quite difficult. In her catalogue, published by Hrvatski bunt, is a mention of a so-called “exhibition” in 1942, organised by the Zagreb Art Gallery, but with very few works and no publicity. These circumstances were similar to those of her subsequent exhibitions, which were poorly organised. And this was certainly due to her lack of awareness. Vesna Parun’s first significant achievement was the publication of two illustrated books in 1942 and 1944. Both were published by the Zagreb Art Gallery and included her illustrations as well as her texts. Her book “Rupture,” published in 1942, was the first collection of her graphic work. In 1942 she also exhibited at the Salon of the Association of Croatian Artists. In addition to the books mentioned, during the war, from 1941 on, Vesna Parun published illustrations in newspapers and magazines, such as the magazine “Kolo” (The Circle) of Jovo Horvat. She also illustrated various books and leaflets about the resistance in the area of Biograd, which were printed by the World Union of Yugoslav Women. In 1944, she drew illustrations for the bulletin “Ljubav,” a bulletin of the “Croatian Freedom Movement” (SKOJ), one of the most important resistance movements against the fascist and Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia
